How we keep you safe

Glaciers and ice caves are wild places. Here is exactly what we do, every single day, so you can enjoy one safely.

We're a family company — Sindri has guided on Vatnajökull since 2015, and the safety call always wins over the schedule, the weather forecast we hoped for, and yes, over revenue too. That's the whole policy in one sentence. Here's what it looks like in practice.

Every cave is checked every morning — together

Natural ice caves change constantly — that's what makes them worth visiting, and what makes them demand respect. Conditions are assessed every morning in cooperation with the other local operators and Vatnajökull National Park: the ice, the meltwater, the entrances, the routes. No group — ours or anyone else's — goes in before that day's check. If the planned cave isn't right that day, we switch to another cave or walk the glacier surface instead. A different cave than planned isn't a downgrade — it's the system working.

Weather and road calls, every day

We check the Icelandic Meteorological Office (vedur.is) and the road administration (road.is) daily through the season. If conditions make a tour unsafe — before departure or even midway through — we cancel it, and you get a full refund or a free reschedule. That includes cancelling a tour halfway if the weather turns. We'd rather refund a tour than run a bad one.

Small groups, on purpose

Our short Ice Cave Inside Vatnajökull tour takes at most 14 guests; the longer Adventures Dream at most 8. Small groups aren't just nicer — they mean the guide sees everyone, all the time, on the ice.

The equipment is on us

We provide the safety gear each tour needs: a helmet and a headlamp when needed, micro spikes when conditions call for them on the short tour, and crampons with a harness on Adventures Dream. You bring warm layers and sturdy hiking boots — your confirmation email spells out exactly what to wear.

Your part

Follow your guide's instructions on the ice — they make the calls. Our minimum ages are 8 on the short tour and 14 on Adventures Dream. If you have a medical condition, an injury or a fitness concern, tell us or your guide before we set out; we use that information only to keep you safe (see our privacy policy). And before any Iceland travel day, it's worth checking SafeTravel.is, Iceland's official travel-safety service.
