How to visit

Always with an experienced guide on a small-group tour with safety gear.

What is an ice cave?

A glacier ice cave is a natural opening carved inside the ice by meltwater flowing through the glacier. The ones we visit form inside Vatnajökull and are completely natural, unlike man-made ice tunnels cut into the glacier elsewhere in Iceland.

The deep, compressed glacier ice absorbs most colours of light and reflects blue, which is why these caves are often called blue ice caves. Every cave is different, and the same cave can look different from one week to the next.

When: the ice cave season

Iceland’s natural ice cave season normally runs from October to April. Cold winter temperatures firm up the glacier and the meltwater channels so that caves can be entered safely.

In summer the ice melts and the caves become unstable, so they are not safe to enter. Because every cave is natural, the exact caves we visit and how we reach them change as the season develops.

Where: Vatnajökull and Jökulsárlón

The most accessible natural ice caves in Iceland are inside Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, in the southeast of the country. Many sit within the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue that feeds Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Our tours all meet at the main parking area by Jökulsárlón, about a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík along Route 1, and continue from there toward the glacier by Super Jeep.

Ice cave tours from Jökulsárlón

All of our ice cave tours are small-group, guided by a local team and depart from Jökulsárlón. Pick the length and pace that suits you.

What to expect on an ice cave tour

You meet your guide at Jökulsárlón and travel by Super Jeep toward the glacier, then walk a short way over icy and uneven terrain to the cave. Your guide provides the glacier safety equipment — a helmet, and micro spikes or crampons when needed — so you only need warm layers and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support.

Because the caves are natural, conditions are checked every morning and the exact route can change. If a tour is cancelled for safety reasons, you can reschedule or receive a full refund.

Ice caves in Iceland — FAQ

When can you visit ice caves in Iceland?

Natural ice cave tours normally run from October to April, when colder temperatures make the glacier stable enough for safe access.

Can you visit ice caves in summer?

Natural blue ice caves are a winter experience and melt or become unsafe in the warmer months. Our ice cave tours run October to April; in summer we offer Super Jeep and glacier experiences instead.

Where are the ice caves in Iceland?

The ice caves we visit are inside Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, in southeast Iceland. Our tours depart from the main parking area at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Are ice caves in Iceland safe?

Glacier ice caves should only be visited with an experienced guide. Our guides assess weather, roads and glacier conditions each morning, and if a route is unsafe we cancel and offer a reschedule or full refund.

Are the ice caves natural or man-made?

The caves we visit are naturally formed inside Vatnajökull by meltwater moving through the glacier. Their shape, colour and access route change through the season as the ice shifts.

What is the difference between a blue ice cave and a crystal ice cave?

“Blue ice cave” and “crystal ice cave” both describe natural caves with clear, dense glacier ice that glows blue. The exact cave we visit depends on the season, safety and access conditions, and the name can change from year to year.

Do I need a guide to see an ice cave?

Yes. Glaciers are constantly moving and the caves are only reached safely with a guide who knows the current conditions. All of our ice cave tours include an experienced local glacier guide and the safety equipment you need.

Which ice cave tour should I choose?

For a focused visit, the 2.5–3 hour Inside Vatnajökull tour is the easiest option. Choose Adventures Dream for a longer day with a glacier hike, or the Photography Tour for a slower, tripod-friendly pace.
