Exploring the Depths: A Journey Into West Wing Ice Cave

Visiting an ice cave beneath Breiðamerkurjökull is like stepping into another world. From the very beginning, the journey is an adventure — one that combines rugged nature, unique landscapes, and the raw beauty of glacial ice.

Our trip begins with a 30-minute drive in one of our specially equipped super jeeps, taking you across rough terrain toward the western edge of Breiðamerkurjökull. This part of the glacier is known for its striking scenery and dramatic ice formations.

Once we arrive, it’s time to gear up. Helmets and microspikes are provided to ensure you are comfortable and safe on the ice. From the parking area, we set off on foot — a scenic 1.6-kilometre walk that leads us straight to the entrance of West Wing Ice Cave.

Inside, the atmosphere is darker than in many other caves. The ice is streaked with shades of black and grey, sculpted over time by volcanic ash, wind, and water. Natural openings in the cave allow light to pour through, highlighting smooth walls and dramatic shapes created by centuries of glacial forces. It feels both mysterious and powerful — a place where the glacier tells its own story.

Due to its accessibility and beauty, the West Wing Ice Cave is a popular destination. On some days — especially at the beginning of October — it can be crowded, with several groups exploring at the same time. Even then, the experience is unforgettable, as the scale and formations of the cave leave a lasting impression.

We usually spend around 30 minutes inside, giving everyone time to explore, take photographs, and appreciate the unique textures and shapes of the cave.

The entire adventure takes about two and a half to three hours from start to finish. While the cave is the highlight, the journey itself — the jeep ride, the walk across the glacier, and the feeling of being so close to this natural wonder — makes the trip complete.

For many visitors, West Wing Ice Cave is more than just a stop on an itinerary. It’s a powerful reminder of Iceland’s living glaciers and the ever-changing forces of nature that shape them.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the West Wing ice cave?

West Wing is a cave system in the western part of the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier, accessed from the Jökulsárlón parking area via Super Jeep. It is named for its position relative to the main accessible cave area and the orientation of the entry passage.

How do you book a tour into West Wing?

West Wing is most often visited on our Adventures Dream tour (5–6 hours, smaller group of 8). The longer tour gives the time to explore the cave’s distinct chambers. Some days the short tour visits West Wing depending on conditions. Email info@glaciertrips.is to confirm what is currently being visited.

What makes West Wing different from other Vatnajökull caves?

The cave has a deeper, more enclosed feel than caves with prominent skylights. The blue tone comes from the depth of the surrounding ice, not from overhead light beams. Photographers tend to favour West Wing for cathedral-style wide-angle shots rather than the silhouette-under-skylight shot.

When does West Wing typically form each season?

The cave area refreezes in late September to October. We scout it in early October and begin visiting once the structure has stabilised, usually by late October or early November. By January–February the blue is at its peak. By April we wind down visits as meltwater becomes active.

Is West Wing the same as the Crystal Cave?

No. “Crystal Cave” is a marketing term used by different operators for whichever cave they are currently visiting that has the clearest blue ice. West Wing is one specific cave system that has been re-accessible across multiple seasons in roughly the same location, though its exact shape and entry change year to year.

How long is the West Wing cave visit?

Typically 60–90 minutes inside on the Adventures Dream tour, less on the short tour. The Adventures Dream length is part of why it is the preferred route for visiting West Wing: there is enough time to walk the chambers properly and try multiple compositions.

What is the cave like for photography?

Tripod-friendly on the Photography Tour. The deeper-feeling chambers need longer exposures (2–8 seconds at f/8 ISO 200) and reward setup time. Headlamps from the guide can be positioned as side-light for wall texture shots.

Is West Wing accessible to all fitness levels?

The walk from where the Super Jeep stops to the cave entrance is moderate, about 15–25 minutes on uneven glacier ice with crampons. Inside the cave the floor is undulating but manageable. If you have any concern about footing on ice, email us before booking and we will give you a straight answer.
